Artist Statement
The pieces in the “Undercover Cross” series reveal the daily
spiritual, emotional and physical challenges that materialize when surviving a
disease that is charged by trepidation and indignity.
I have referenced my
personal life, as well as the subculture of my community, to communicate the
interruption of a dream. I have focused
on the journey of self preservation and
the resistance of disappearance.
The mixed media
paintings invite the viewer to the interior layers of a condition that is
forced to be hidden by fear and ignorance.
View a different perspective of a modern day plague full of isolated
psychological torture and physical betrayals, ironically overshadowed by mortal
endurance.
The large scale pieces
mirror the significant force and weight of the disease, while the palette
assists in exposing the combination of emotions that surface from a solemn
state of health. The layers of words,
images and everyday items further support the unseen struggle to persevere with
dignity.
I hope this series
will offer a novel perspective on a contemporary disease that remains in the
public social shadows cast by selected blindness.
